Meet Jacob Kaufman: Inspiring a Community Through Muffins

"I like making people smile--that's all.  There are a lot of people who have had some pretty unfortunately life experiences that can use money a lot more than I."

During the day, Jacob Kaufman is an Associate at Internet and Technology Law firm Smithline PC. Outside of law, Jacob is The Muffin Man, baking and giving muffins to our homeless neighbors. He also leads walking tours through San Francisco neighborhoods, is an avid fan of the Giants, Niners, and Warriors, and actively supports his favorite Bay Area music nonprofit Undercover Presents. Born and raised in The Bay, Jacob traveled and lived in 10 cities across 4 countries before returning home to SF. Learn more about Jacob below, and what his one thing is to in making a difference in 2016, including how you can participate in supporting homeless neighbors on National Muffin Day.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day, we're highlighting people who do so much for others in the community. Learn more here and tell us, what is the one thing you are doing to create change this year?

What inspires you to give back?

I'm not sure I like to use the phrase "give back" here.  "Give back" implies that somebody gave me something in the first place, and I'm returning the gift out of some kind of obligation.  I don't see it like that.  I just like giving because most people seem to like receiving.  I mean, what was I going to do with that $5 anyway?  Buy a piece of gourmet toast?

But seriously, I like making people smile--that's all.  There are a lot of people who have had some pretty unfortunately life experiences that can use money a lot more than I.

What are some of your favorite things to do that make a difference in the community?

Manual distribution of baked goods; educating city newcomers on our city's rich history, and when I can, pro bono legal work.

Who inspires you the most in the community?

I'm not sure I want to embarrass anybody by naming names, but I have great respect for anybody who is a public school teacher or non-profit worker.  I also like Broke-Ass Stuart...or at least I liked his older stuff.

What is your one thing you’re committing to in making a difference in 2016?

Baking and giving is an ongoing commitment, and I hope to continue with my Muffin Man ways. I'm also working on an oral history project to preserve the stories of elderly long-time San Franciscans.
